       En sus inicios profesionales, a mediados de los anos 30, Witney hizo un poco de todo: fue montador, ayudante de direccion e, incluso, guionista, pero a partir de 1937 se dedico a la realizacion, convirtiendose en uno de los directores prolificos de Hollywood, en este caso para la productora Republic. En sus primeros anos como realizador, se especializo en seriales realizados en colaboracion, en particular con John English. La division del trabajo era sencilla: este rodaba las escenas de dialogo y los interiores, y Witney las escenas de accion. De este modo, fue adquiriendo justa fama como director de peliculas de accion, con grandes peleas y largas cabalgadas. Aunque la parte mas extensa de su filmografia la ocupan los westerns, es justo reconocer su labor en otros filmes de accion como Aventuras del capitan Maravillas (Adventures of Captain Marvel, 1941), se rial realizado con el ya citado John English. Como al gunos otros de sus companeros, sirvio extensamente a estrellas del western, en este caso Roy Rogers y Rex Allen. En sus peliculas hay de todo, pero no seria malo revisarlas con alguna atencion porque encontraremos en ellas no pocos detalles interesantes de personal estilo cinematografico.

       Nacido Samuel Neufeld, hermano de Sigmund Neufeld, futuro jefe de produccion de PRC, dirige cortometrajes desde 1926, y largometrajes desde 1933. Probablemente el mas prolifico realizador norteamericano de la era sonora, dirigio, sobre todo, westerns. Por sus manos paso una parte importante de los viejos heroes del genero, en peliculas de una hora de duracion y argumentos eternamente repetidos. Solo leer su filmografia produce cierto vertigo. Establecerla rigurosamente es una tarea ardua, especialmente en lo relativo al orden cronologico estricto, por lo que en esta ocasion mas que en ninguna otra hay que entender que ese orden es susceptible de correccion. Utiliza los seudonimos de Peter Stewart y Sherman Scott. Se ha prescindido de tres aparentes largometrajes, situados al final de su carrera y obtenidos, cada uno de ellos, por super posicion de dos episodios del serial televisivo “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans”. Aunque el nivel medio de los filmes de Sam Newfeld es realmente bajo, hay que citar dos curiosidades: Harlem on the Prairie (1937) esta interpretado integramente por negros, y The Terror of Tiny Town (1938), por enanos, que se mueven en decorados de tamano normal.

Curiosamente, y a pesar de que ambas funciones, la de director y la de guionista, las simultaneo, no es excesiva la cifra de las peliculas en que de sempeno ambos cometidos. Fue todo lo prolifico que las circunstancias –peliculas de una hora de duracion en productos baratos de consumo inmediato– aconsejaban. Casi la tercera parte de sus westerns sonoros los protagonizo el actor Ken Maynard.
